Venue Finding Services York

York’s ancient city walls were built around 71 AD when the Romans erected a fort occupying around 50 acres near the banks of the River Ouse. The remaining sections of the city walls offer a unique elevated perspective of the city and are a great way to explore. At various parts of them, such as Bootham Bar, you can climb the steps and walk along the wall for some fantastic views of the Minster and the Museum.

York has got that little something extra about it to make it a fantastic location for events, particularly those with free time for delegates, as there is lots to see and do in the city – and it’s compact. It’s small enough to walk from one side to the other in just 20 minutes!

For hotels; York has lots of the big name brands; Hilton, Marriott, Park Inn by Radisson, Novotel, Hampton by Hilton and a Holiday Inn. All of these hotels have got excellent meeting facilities. It’s also got some wonderful independent hotels like the Principal York and The Grand Hotel which is a fantastic 5 star hotel right in the city centre. The hotel’s Grand Ballroom can seat 120 delegates, or for a little more history, how about your next board meeting in the Chairman’s Suite, which was once the original office of the Chair of the North East Railway. After a long conference day, there’s a superb spa to relax in!

For something a little unusual, how about the Yorkshire Air Museum which is just outside the city centre – and makes for a unique and atmospheric backdrop to your event. Their parkland location, in the grounds of the original World War II air base is easily reached by road and public transport.

A feature on York wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the extraordinary Castle Howard. Building started in 1699 but took over 100 years to complete – spanning the lifetimes of three Earls. Since the 1960’s Castle Howard has been used as a location for many film and television productions, like The venue can accommodate anything from an intimate board meeting for 14 up to an event for thousands.

The best way to get around York city centre is on foot; the roads within the Old City are pedestrian precincts, closed to all cars except disabled drivers and emergency vehicles between 8am and 4pm. Most of the sights are only a short walk between one another.
